Overview of
Vanderbilt Surgical Residency Programs

The graduate educational programs in Surgery and the Surgical Specialties at Vanderbilt University provide residents with rotations at three area hospitals. The three hospitals, designated the “Vanderbilt University Integrated Hospitals,” consist of the 661-bed Vanderbilt University Hospital, the nearby 233-bed Nashville Veterans Affairs Hospital, and the 571-bed Saint Thomas Hospital. Each of these hospitals is integrated with the teaching and training programs of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Each surgical service is supervised by staff members at the several hospitals who are full-time faculty members of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Surgical training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center prepares residents for careers as academic surgeons. The Vanderbilt Section of Surgical Sciences offers ACGME-approved residency programs in General Surgery (James A. O'Neill, Jr., M.D., Director), Surgical Critical Care and Trauma (Addison May, M.D., Director), Vascular Surgery (Thomas C. Naslund, M.D., Director), Neurological Surgery (George S. Allen, M.D., Ph.D., Director), Plastic Surgery (R. Bruce Shack, M.D., Director), Thoracic Surgery (Joe B. Putnam, Jr., M.D., Director), and Urologic Surgery (Joseph A. Smith, Jr., M.D., Director). The Section also offers American Dental Association-approved residencies in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Samuel J. McKenna, D.D.S., M.D., Director), General Practice Dentistry (Walter Colón, D.M.D., Director), and Orthodontics (Harry L. Legan, D.D.S., Director).
