Vanderbilt University Medical Center:
One of The Affiliated Hospitals Contributing to
Vanderbilt Surgical Education

Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been a part of Nashville since 1875. When the University awarded the first diplomas of graduation to sixty-one new Doctors of Medicine in 1875, the medical school was owned and operated as the private property of the local practicing physicians who comprised the faculty, a system typical of medical education in the United States at that time. In 1925 the school was moved from the old south campus to its present site at the southeast corner of the main campus about one mile south of the downtown area. Thanks to the Carnegie Foundation and the Rockefeller-financed General Education Board, Vanderbilt Medical School was able to attract some of the best-trained scientists and teachers in the nation for its faculty. Since 1925 the school has maintained its reputation for excellence and the hospital has grown from 200 to 750 beds.

Complementary facilities have grown proportionately. The Andrew B. Learned Graduate Science Hall and Stevenson Science Center adjoin the School of Medicine on the north and, with the Rudolph A. Light Medical Education Building, provide space for scientists of Vanderbilt Graduate School as well as the School of Medicine, permitting investigators from many disciplines to work together on the different facets of biomedical problems. Completion of the 661-bed Vanderbilt University Hospital and a new 1200 seat auditorium contiguous to the Light Building and Veterans Hospital have greatly enhanced the service and educational facilities of the medical complex.

Vanderbilt University Hospital admitted 33,854 patients in FY 2003 and 29,000 operative cases were performed in VUH operating suites.

Much of the development of clinical facilities at Vanderbilt reflects the shifting focus of patient care to the outpatient setting. The Vanderbilt Clinic, which opened in 1988 and is adjacent to Vanderbilt University Hospital, provides complete outpatient care facilities. The Day Surgery Center in the Vanderbilt Clinic, which contains a full complement of laser facilities, plays an important role in the preparation of residents for their future practice.

The Surgical Pavilion at Medical Center East, which opened in 1992, added 34,000 square feet of state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical facilities designed to provide high-quality, efficient, safe, and convenient services for adults and children. Medical Center East is connected to the Vanderbilt University Hospital O.R. by enclosed pedestrian walkways for easy access to shared facilities.

In 2005 the Vanderbilt Audiology Program, top in the nation according to the April 2004 U.S. News and World Report rankings, will have a new home in 2005 in the new Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences.

A number of other new and recently constructed buildings have better positioned Vanderbilt as a teaching and research medical center for the twenty-first century. The Annette and Irwin Eskind Biomedical Library was completed in April 1994 at a cost of $14 million. The five-story, 78,000-square foot building provides space for 83,000 volumes and houses the VUMC Center for Biomedical Informatics.

The Village at Vanderbilt, a new medical mall adjacent to Vanderbilt University Hospital, houses specialty centers for surgical outpatient procedures. These facilities accommodate the growing demand for outpatient procedures at the Vanderbilt Clinic. They also offer ease of access and state-of-the-art diagnostic services consistent with the Vanderbilt effort to provide regional centers of excellence.

The new 80-bed Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital serves patients needing long-term care and rehabilitation. Unique in Middle Tennessee, the Stallworth joins physicians, therapists, and counsellors to serve the individualized needs of inpatients and outpatients suffering a broad range of physically debilitating maladies. The Stallworth has a clinical laboratory for motion analysis, an orthopedic research laboratory, and a laboratory for research in multiple sclerosis. It also contains a well-equipped gymnasium for recreation and rehabilitation.

In 1995 Vanderbilt completed a second medical research building, MRBII, at a cost of $35 million. The 207,000 square foot structure is dedicated to research in the fields of cell biology, molecular physics, medicine, and cancer. With the completion of renovations and major new construction in 2000, this facility, now the Frances Williams Preston Building, is part of the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, recently designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In the spring of 2003 Vanderbilt advanced its commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research by renovating Learned Hall and constructing adjacent to it the 350,000 square foot Medical Research Building III. Space in this new facility quickly filled, and on May 2004 construction began on Medical Reseearch Building IV, which will add almost 200,000 additional square feet of research space.

Clinical space increased significantly with the February 2004 completion of the 206-bed Monroe Carrell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt, a union of the best services and expertise in an environment designed and constructed to serve the special needs of young patients and their families. It is a testament to the enduring dedication of many people to improve the quality of health care for children. §
