Saint Thomas Hospital :
One of The Integrated Hospitals Contributing to
Vanderbilt Surgical Education
Saint
Thomas Hospital is one of the health care facilities of
Ascension Health. This 571-bed hospital, a tertiary care,
private-practice-based center, is noted for particular
surgical expertise in areas of gastrointestinal surgery,
vascular surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. However, all
adult surgical specialties are represented on the active
staff since the hospital provides care for all
medical/surgical problems of an adult population. Surgical
residents rotate through the following surgical services:
General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Surgical Critical
Care. General surgery residents also participate in the care
of urology, gynecologic oncology, plastic surgery, renal
transplant, and thoracic surgery patients since no residents
in the surgical disciplines rotate to Saint Thomas Hospital.
Saint Thomas patients come from a wide referral base well
beyond the traditional geographic area for a community
practice-based hospital.
The hospital encompasses state-of-the-art systems and
equipment consistent with its dedication to excellence in
care, teaching, and quality of service. The chiefs of the
Medicine and Surgery Departments, as well as their Associate
Chiefs, are full-time Vanderbilt faculty members with
administrative offices and responsibilities at Saint Thomas
Hospital. Most practicing Saint Thomas surgeons are clinical
faculty members of the Section of Surgical Sciences at
Vanderbilt. The Emergency Service backs up Vanderbilt's
Emergency Room when necessary.
The Ambulatory Surgical Center includes six operating
rooms performing 5,000 operations per year. The Main
Operating Suite includes 32 operating rooms performing about
14,000 operations per year. Transplantation activities
include cardiac and renal transplants. All of these
activities contribute to and participate in the hospital's
goal of continued excellence in care, education, and
clinical research.
All medical and surgical residents, including those from
general surgery, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, and emergency
room representatives at Saint Thomas Hospital are appointed
from Vanderbilt Medical Center programs. Resident rotations
occur at all levels of the Surgery Residency Program as well
as in the Vascular Surgery Program. Medical students have
third year surgical clerkships at Saint Thomas Hospital and
regularly select fourth year surgical electives here.
Saint Thomas Hospital is located within three miles of
the Vanderbilt Medical Center campus and, therefore,
integration of the educational activities is easily
accomplished throughout the surgical programs. Thus, all
faculty, residents, and medical students can be active
participants in the academic, educational, and scholarly
activities of the surgical departments at all integrated
hospitals. §
