Residency in Plastic Surgery
at Vanderbilt
[Department of Plastic Surgery Home Page]
R. Bruce Shack, M.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency Program.
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program is a traditional two-year program. Prerequisite training conforms to the requirements of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Most of the Plastic Surgery residents have completed training in general surgery or otolaryngology or some other related surgical specialty prior to beginning their plastic surgery training. All residency positions are filled through the Plastic Surgery Matching Program.
The bulk of the training is done at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Our residents also rotate at Baptist Hospital where they have the opportunity to work with a world-renowned group of clinical faculty. A rotation at the Veterans Administration Hospital is also a critical portion of the training. The residents are exposed to the broad spectrum of plastic surgery with extensive experience in all areas including craniofacial, maxillofacial, head and neck, congenital anomalies, microsurgery and hand surgery. There is a busy residents' cosmetic clinic, and the residents also have the opportunity to work with the full-time faculty on their cosmetic cases.
Residents are encouraged to make use of the excellent research facilities under the direction of Lillian B. Nanney, Ph.D. The facilities include a histopathology lab, a molecular biology lab, darkroom, microscope with computerized morphometry, as well as a small animal surgery area. There is an available fresh cadaver laboratory and an area for large animal surgery and electron microscopy if needed. There is a full-time research fellow in the laboratory, and plastic surgery residents are encouraged to participate in projects of their own design.
