Pediatric Surgery
at Vanderbilt

[Department of Pediatric Surgery Home Page]

The pediatric aspect of the surgical residency is conducted at the Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Pediatric Surgery has close interchange with general surgery, all of the surgical specialties, and with pediatric medicine. Residents rotate on Pediatric Surgery at PGY 1, PGY 3, and PGY 4 levels. Residents participate in a weekly teaching clinic predominantly led by Dr. James A. O'Neill, Jr. They have the opportunity to encounter a broad spectrum of disorders in the newborn as well as older children. Emphasis is placed on providing the resident with a firm foundation in the fundamental principles of surgical management of children, particularly with regard to congenital malformations, malignancies, injuries, and a large number of common pediatric surgical conditions.

Approximately 2,800 major surgical procedures and 4,100 outpatient visits yearly are managed by the pediatric surgical service. The residents participate with the staff in daily rounds and weekly conferences.
