[Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Home Page ]
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency offers the superior dental school graduate a six-year experience that includes advanced standing enrollment in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, one year of general surgery residency, and training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This program satisfies the formal training requirements for examination by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency provides the house officer with increasing responsibility for patient management as consistent with optimal patient care. Residents in oral and maxillofacial surgery acquire training in the comprehensive management of facial trauma, acquired and developmental deformities of the facial skeleton, dentoalveolar surgery, TM joint surgery and surgical management of obstructive sleep apnea. Residents work closely with the orthodontic clinical faculty in the comprehensive management of facial deformities. Other areas of exposure include secondary alveolar cleft repair, functional reconstruction of jaw continuity defects, osseointegrated implants, the management of head and neck infections and benign neoplasms and cysts of the oral and maxillofacial region, and esthetic maxillofacial surgery. Resident participation in clinical research projects is strongly encouraged.
Surgical experience is provided in the operating room and outpatient clinics at Vanderbilt University Hospital, the VA Medical Center, Nashville, and Interfaith Dental Clinic.
Annually, two worthy residents from the Department of Oral Surgery are chosen to receive the Konrad and Clara Lux Scholarship for tuition assistance.

[Orthodontics Clinical Information]
The Division of Orthodontics emphasizes the treatment of patients with simple to complex craniofacial and dentofacial deformities. It offers a thirty-six month postgraduate program in Orthodontics combining clinical education and training, didactics, research, and teaching. The program integrates basic science and clinical orthodontics. Harry L. Legan, D.D.S., is Professor and Chief of the Division of Orthodontics. Full-time and part-time faculty present the core didactic material in seminars and lectures. A strong feature of the clinical education is intensive course work in basic biomechanical theory and technique and focuses on growth and development problems in the treatment of patients from all age groups. A multidisciplinary course in TMJ diagnosis and therapy is provided. Residents in the Division of Orthodontics are active with the craniofacial anomalies team and provide treatment for orthognathic surgery patients. Cooperating with the Division of General Practice Dentistry, residents assist in the care of patients requiring complex dental treatment plans involving implants, restoration, and periodontal therapy. Residents are also trained in the application of computers for diagnosis, treatment planning, and managing an orthodontic practice.
