Residency in Neurological Surgery
at Vanderbilt
[Department of Neurological Surgery Home Page]
The Vanderbilt Neurological Surgery Residency Training Program is a six-year experience in neurosurgery and the neurosciences following a year of general surgery training. Two new residents are appointed each year.
The first two years are devoted to rotations on the adult and pediatric neurosurgical services at Vanderbilt Hospital and the Saint Thomas Hospital. The next two years are spent on rotations in neuropathology and at least one year in a specialized area of laboratory or clinical research. The final two years are spent as senior resident of the Veterans Administration Hospital Neurosurgical Service, senior resident of the Neurosurgical Service at Saint Thomas Hospital, chief resident of the Spine Service at Vanderbilt Hospital, and six months as the Administrative and Intracranial chief resident at Vanderbilt Hospital.
The gradual assumption of increasing responsibility and authority during the six-year period is appropriate for examination for certification by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
The Vanderbilt Neurological Surgery Residency Program provides the necessary “hands-on” operating room experience and the intellectual climate, derived from clinical and laboratory research, to produce graduates who are excellent clinical surgeons and who can make significant contributions to the neurosciences.
