Residency in Thoracic Surgery
at Vanderbilt

[Department of Thoracic Surgery Home Page]

The Thoracic Surgery Residency is based in the Vanderbilt University Hospital, Vanderbilt Children's Hospital, and the Nashville VA Hospital. The Vanderbilt University Hospital has an adult cardiac surgical and general thoracic surgical program as well as heart and lung transplantation. The Vanderbilt Children's Hospital has a congenital cardiac surgical program, and pediatric heart transplantation program. The VA Hospital has an adult cardiac surgical program combined with a pulmonary and esophageal service.

The residency training in thoracic surgery (which includes training in thoracic surgery and cardiac surgery) is a three-year program. One new resident is appointed each year. This provides a balanced training program with the full spectrum of cardiac and thoracic surgical problems being seen during the three-year program.

The workload is extensive at each of the hospitals. The surgical house officers who rotate through these cardiothoracic services have the opportunity to participate actively in the pre- and postoperative management as well as the operative management of a large number of thoracic and cardiac surgical patients. The opportunity to gain expertise in monitoring critically ill patients, as well as considerable exposure to cardiopulmonary physiology, is also provided.

More complete information is available on the Resident Education section of the Department of Thoracic Surgery web site.
