Vanderbilt Surgical Residency

Benefits & Other Information

The goal of the Vanderbilt University Surgical Residency Program is to train surgical scholars. We seek residency applicants with the dedication and motivation to acquire knowledge and skills which will enable them to achieve excellence in the care of surgical patients, and, in addition, to make contributions of their own to surgery and to better surgical care.

In pursuit of our mission we maintain a challenging and rewarding educational environment. Residents are provided with regular formal performance evaluations. Should any grievances arise, the Office of Educational Support, the Office of Graduate Medical Education, and the House Staff Advisory Council work to resolve them.

After three months they are eligible for the Life Insurance Plan and the Personal Spending Accounts (pretax deductions for health care and dependent care expenses). Vanderbilt also pays the premium for professional liability coverage and legal defense on a modified occurrence basis for injury caused by a medical incident within the scope of VUMC-assigned activities.

Parking

Vanderbilt pays the entire annual cost for residents to park their vehicles in a preferred Medical Center parking garage.

On Call

For each overnight in-house call night the Hospital provides a sleeping room and meals.

Licensure to Practice

In the State of Tennessee, individuals participating in an approved medical education training program must have proof of exemption from the requirement for a Tennessee license to practice medicine. For each individual admitted to a Vanderbilt residency program, the Vanderbilt Hospital Administration applies to the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners for exemption status.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Training

The Vanderbilt Hospital Administration requires that new house staff physicians have current training in Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the standards of the American Heart Association. ACLS training may be acquired at Vanderbilt. Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) is provided as well.§
