Dr. Torquati’s clinical interests include general surgery, particularly the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques, and bariatric surgery.

Education:
Dr. Torquati received his undergraduate degree from the Liceo Scientifico, Tullio Levi Civita, Rome, Italy in 1982 (diploma vote 60/60).  He received his M.D. degree, Summa cum Laude, in 1988 from the University of Rome 'Tor Vergata”, School of Medicine, Italy

Post-Graduate Training:
In 1993 Dr. Torquati completed the Surgical Residency Program in General Surgery from the Department of Surgery, University of Rome 'Tor Vergata', Rome, Italy. In the following year he was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Surgery, Stanford University. After serving as Assistant Professor for a year at his alma mater in Rome, he began a Post-Doctoral Surgical Research Fellowship at the Department of Surgery, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon. In 1996 he began the General Surgery Residency Program at the Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland, Oregon.  He completed his residency in 2000. After serving for one year as a Staff Surgeon at Good Shepherd Hospital, Hermiston, Oregon, he began and completed the two-year Laparoscopic Surgery Fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee. In 2003 Dr. Torquati completed the course of study for the Master of Science in Clinical Investigations from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Other Responsibilities:
Dr. Torquati is a member of the Society of the American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). He is an Associate Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  As an invited lecturer he has made presentations at the American College of Surgeons, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Nashville Surgical Society. Dr. Torquati is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

Research:
Dr. Torquati’s research interests include the effect of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery in combination with omentectomy on glucose metabolism of patients and the effect of laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication on reversing tumor supressor genes in patients with Barrett’s esophagus.

Publications:
Dr. Torquati has published 31 peer-reviewed articles as well as numerous scientific congress proceedings and abstracts. Review some of his abstracts on PubMed.
